White Space Over Time
It’s 6 p.m. on a Thursday. The entirety of journalism remains huddled around the DLAB computers, adding finishing touches to the layout of our upcoming issue. The aesthetic of the page ranges from scrapbook style to old print newspapers, each utilizing all the available space on the page. Through journalism, I have received the opportunity to play around in the design realm and develop my affinity for various graphics elements. Editing using programs such as Photoshop and InDesign has introduced me to the idea of creative freedom and the impact it can have on layout. This year, as layout editor of the Crown and Shield, I have also gained extensive knowledge about white space and its desirability in design. At first glance, white space can look unintentional and as though it adds no additional value to the page.
