White Space Over Time

It’s 6 p.m. on a Thursday. The entirety of journalism remains huddled around the DLAB computers, adding finishing touches to the layout of our upcoming issue. The aesthetic of the page ranges from scrapbook style to old print newspapers, each utilizing all the available space on the page.  Through journalism, I have received the opportunity to play around in the design realm and develop my affinity for various graphics elements. Editing using programs such as Photoshop and InDesign has introduced me to the idea of creative freedom and the impact it can have on layout. This year, as layout editor of the Crown and Shield, I have also gained extensive knowledge about white space and its desirability in design.  At first glance, white space can look unintentional and as though it adds no additional value to the page. Home Is Where the Food Is

The fresh aroma of pizza fills the kitchen. Not just any pizza but my dad’s homemade pizza. It is our Friday night tradition. The night starts with us mincing garlic, slicing mushrooms, and sauteing onions. As we wait somewhat impatiently for the oven to preheat, my dad and I sing throwbacks over the sound of Top Chef reruns. When the oven dings, we smother the warm naan bread in Alfredo sauce and sprinkle on the three-blend cheese. The toppings go on next along with some chillies and herbs for a flavor kick. As the pizza bakes in the oven, my dad and I work to bring out the ingredients for chocolate chip banana bread.   I lay out the array of cage free eggs, Irish butter, flour, sugar, and Ghirardelli chocolate chips. I pop a few of the chips into my mouth in the process of bringing it from the pantry. As I blend together the batter, I sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg and salt and a dash of vanilla. My Summer Home Away from Home I watched in awe as the kids built a boat purely out of cardboard and recycled materials. They colored it bright red and “rowed” it around the room. Such an exchange may seem odd, but it was common within the walls of Camp Galileo. Running around in a chicken hat while singing songs with the other staffers exemplifies the Galileo spirit that has come to make my summers full of light and joy. I feel the deepest sense of belonging when surrounded by kids with boundless curiosity and involved in camp traditions led by passionate people.       Camp Galileo has always be en a special place for me ever since I was a child. I used to look forward to spending my summers there engrossed in filmmaking and cooking up culinary concoctions. It was the first place where I felt I could truly open up and be myself.
